Random Pics

Here are some random pics. Come visit us for the live version!

Teepee

We also made a teepee from bamboo poles to cover the septic tank cover. We planted the Italian flat beans and moon flowers so eventually, hopefully, the plants will grow up the poles and cover the ugliness.

Things are Growing!

Check it out everybody! We can't believe things are growing...maybe we are kinda good at this!
We ate stuff from the garden today for the first time. Some spinach and 2 of the sweetest
strawberries we've ever eaten. (Two bad there are exactly two, haha)
Check out the adorable chairs and table we got at a yard sale in Rochester yesterday! Its a perfect place to chillax!

Frozen Veggies

It snowed today. In May! Man! So much for the "April 28th=last frost date". We're keeping our fingers crossed that nothing croaks. My dad called and said the weather report is calling for a hard frost (what's the difference between a hard frost and a soft frost?), so I went out and covered the boxes with tarps. I whispered "keep warm!" They all looked pretty good, but the tomatoes look depressed.

Meanwhile....Dave's soakin' up the rays in North Carolina. Its 80 there!

Seed Markers

With square foot gardening, its important to keep track of what you plant where. Especially for us novice gardeners...we don't know a carrot leaf from a pea sprout! (Well....we do now ;) When I first planted everything, I wrote the seed types of popsicle sticks with Sharpee, thinking it would last forever. It washed off after the first rain! So then I wrote in pencil. That lasted a little longer, but pretty much faded away after a couple of weeks.

Then today at my ma's, we were browsin' around Etsy as we're known to do, and somebody was selling plant markers made out of old silverware! How cool is that?! (And expensive...she was chargin' like, $40 for 12!)

So, who has the supplies to make anything? My ma! She had a bunch of old spoons and forks (need to use silver plated for this...stainless steel won't pound flat...believe me I've tried). Using a hammer, we pounded them until they were totally flat, and then used metal letter stampers (they were all greasy, so they don't rust) and pounded letters to spell the different veggies. It was difficult to line up perfectly, and sometimes didn't come out the first time, but I kinda like that they're not perfect! And they will last forever!

Fence

Our garden is hummin' along. Things are blooming and popping up in the soil. But not everything is so cheery. Guess who's living under the garage?

That's right. Bun Bun. And the neighbor kids have reported seeing him nosing around in the garden, early in the morning. So, we had no choice but to take action to protect our precious produce.

We built a fence. That's right! Me and Dave, all by ourselves! But it took some doin'!
Here are some pics:

Notice that we lined the fence with chicken wire. Sorry Bun Bun, no free food for you! Stay out!
